The bridge between having goals and making them a reality is action.
If you want to get from where you are now to where you want to be / who you want to be / how you want to be / what you want to be able to do… you have to take action. Dull, but oh so true.
Now, action is a thing that can only be undertaken in the present. You can’t change things tomorrow, no matter how much you plan or promise. You can only change things right now.
So today, when you think of something you need to do, something you should do (groan!) – instead of putting it off, make a point of getting to it straight away. Decide to take action and then take at least one step.
Because the thing is, when you actually just do it, it is never as bad as it seemed when you were busy procrastinating and coming up with reasons you couldn’t possibly do it right now. Not only that, but you’ll feel FANTASTIC for having it done and for being an awesome achiever!
Decision + action = achievement
Start with little things. Instead of noticing something that needs wiping and adding it to the massive list of chores to be done in your head, just grab a cloth and give it a wipe! Just that one patch.
This works in a couple of ways. If you do a few ‘Just Do It Right Now’ jobs each day, you start to feel lighter about everything. Your environment becomes proof of your ability to be all over it, rather than proof of your hopelessness. And, you become – bit by bit – someone who just does stuff, rather than getting crushed by the guilt of not doing stuff.
This then leads to feeling really positive and starting to try bigger, harder stuff, knowing you are a person who just does things! Not to mention the 2nd law of physics from ole Sir Isaac Newton – that an object (or person!) in motion tends to stay in motion. While you’re up and doing, you easily and automatically do a few others things along the way. Win, win, win!
So, today maybe try:
- looking for 1 or 2 small things around you that need doing
- instead of feeling drained by more things to do and automatically putting them in the back of your head for later, just DO THEM!
- focus on the feeling of awesomeness and lightness you feel from having taken action. No, everything is not perfect now, but you’ve made a great start and proved to yourself that you are an action taker.
On that note, I am off to do a super short kettlebell workout. No, I have no idea what I’m doing, but before I can talk myself out of it, I’m gonna give it a go! What’s the worst that can happen?? No, wait, don’t answer that!
What are you going to just get on with? Pick just one tiny thing. It could be anything from wiping that sticky mark off the light switch to a reply you’ve been putting off, to a stroll round your block… I’d love to hear.
